Talhah ibn Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man from the people of Najd with disheveled hair came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We heard the humming of his voice, but we could not understand what he was saying until he came near. He asked about Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Five prayers during the day and night." The man asked, "Do I have to do anything else besides them?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "No, unless you do so voluntarily."
Then the Prophet ﷺ said: "Fasting in the month of Ramadan." The man asked, "Is there anything else I have to do?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "No, unless you do so voluntarily." Then the Prophet ﷺ mentioned zakat to him, and the man asked, "Is there anything else I have to do?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "No, unless you do so voluntarily." The man turned away saying, "By Allah, I will neither increase nor decrease what Allah has obligated upon me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "He will succeed if he is truthful."
