Chapter: Departure from Arafah and Muzdalifah

Zujajat al-Masabih 3072Volume 2

English

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I never saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) pray any prayer outside its proper time except two: he combined Maghrib and Isha at Muzdalifah, and prayed Fajr earlier than its usual time that day." [Agreed upon] In Muslim's version: "He prayed Fajr before its time when it was still dark." Both Sahihayn record that he prayed both prayers together at Muzdalifah and prayed Fajr at dawn.

Note 1

I never saw

(1) "I never saw" - Al-Nawawi said Abu Hanifah used Ibn Mas'ud's statement "I never saw him pray outside its time except..." to prohibit combining prayers while traveling, since Ibn Mas'ud was among the Prophet's closest companions and only reported this one instance of combination.

Note 2

Prayed Fajr earlier

(2) "Prayed Fajr earlier" - This supports Abu Hanifah's view that it is preferable to pray Fajr at the end of its timeframe on other days. (Al-Nawawi)

Note 1
