Ubayy ibn Ka’b and Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with them) recited: Fasting for three consecutive days. Ahmad narrated it, and Athram narrated it with his chain.
(2) The statement: “They recited, etc.”: Meaning if he cannot afford any of the three things, he fasts for three consecutive days. Shafi’i said: He may choose to separate them or make them consecutive, due to the generality of the text. According to us, there is the recitation of Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him): Fasting for three consecutive days, which is like a well-known report, and it is permissible to add to the general text of the Book with it. This hadith also supports it. [Taken from “Al-Hidayah” and “Al-Binayah”]
