Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The people of the pre-Islamic era ate some things and avoided others out of disgust. Then Allah sent His Prophet (ﷺ), revealed His Book, made lawful what is lawful, and prohibited what is prohibited. Whatever He made lawful is lawful, whatever He prohibited is prohibited, and whatever He was silent about is pardoned. He recited: Say, I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden 2 to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal (Qur’an 6:145).

(2) The statement: Say, I do not find within that which was revealed to me, etc.: This indicates that prohibition is known through revelation, not whims. Thus, in “Al-Mirqat.”
Note 2
(٢) قوله: قل لا أجد فيما أوحي إلي إلخ: وفيه تنبيه على أن التحريم إنما يعلم بالوحي لا بالهوى. كذا في (المرقاة).
