Note 1

Whoever wears a garment of fame

(1) The statement: Whoever wears a garment of fame: That is, a garment of arrogance, boasting, or pride, or what ascetics wear to show off their asceticism, or what a leader wears to signify leadership, like a green garment, or what pseudo-scholars wear to resemble scholars while being among the foolish. So it is in Al-Marqah. It is said in Radd Al-Muhtar: The best is what is between precious and lowly, as the best matters are the middle ones, due to the prohibition of the two extremes, which are extreme preciousness or lowliness.
