Chapter on Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil

Zujajat al-Masabih 4931Volume 4

English

Nu’man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The example of one who compromises on Allah’s limits and one who violates them is like a group of people who drew lots for a ship. Some were in its lower part, and some in its upper part. Those below passed water over those above, causing them annoyance. So, one took an axe and began to bore a hole in the ship’s bottom. They came to him and said: ‘What are you doing?’ He said: ‘You were annoyed by me, but I must have water.’ If they seize his hand, they save him and themselves; if they leave him, they destroy him and themselves.”
