Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “Trials 1 are presented to hearts like a mat, stick by stick. Any heart that absorbs them is marked with a black spot, and any heart that rejects them is marked with a white spot, until hearts become two types: one white like a polished stone, unharmed by any trial as long as the heavens and earth endure, and another black and murky like an overturned jug, neither recognizing good nor rejecting evil, except what it has absorbed of its desires.”
