Chapter on Descent of Jesus (peace be upon him)

Zujajat al-Masabih 5294Volume 4

English

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A group from my nation will continue fighting for the truth, prevailing until the Day of Resurrection.” He said, “Jesus, son of Mary, will descend, and their leader will say, ‘Come, lead us in prayer.’ He will say, ‘No, some of you are leaders over others, an honor from Allah for this nation.’”

Note 1

He will say, ‘No…’

(1) His statement: “He will say, ‘No…’”: Al-Taftazani said in Sharh al-Aqa’id that Jesus will pray with people and lead them, with the Mahdi following him due to his superiority and priority in leadership. Ibn Abi Shaybah said this aligns with Muslim’s narration, “your leader is from among you,” but Jabir’s Hadith seems to contradict it. The reconciliation is that Jesus may have led them upon his descent to show he follows their law, then, when invited to lead prayer, indicated the Mahdi should lead to honor Allah’s favor to this nation. I say: The reverse reconciliation is also possible, and it may be claimed that the latter is preferable, as “your leader is from among you” clearly indicates the Mahdi is the leader. Allah knows best. His superiority does not negate following another, and priority in leadership is countered by the honor of this nation’s enduring law, as the Hadith states. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
