Chapter on Description of the Fire and Its People

Zujajat al-Masabih 5444Volume 4

English

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “If a piece of lead like this”—and he pointed to something like a skull—“were sent from the sky to the earth, a distance of five hundred years, it would reach the earth before night. But if it were sent from the head of the chain, it would travel for forty autumns, day and night, before reaching its base or bottom.” 1

Note 1

Or its bottom.

(1) His statement: “Or its bottom.” This is a doubt from the narrator. The bottom refers to its end, synonymous with its base, literally or metaphorically. The hesitation is regarding the heard wording. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 1

(۱) قوله أو قعرها شك من الراوي، والمراد بقعرها نهايتها، وهي معنى أصلها حقيقة أو مجازا، فالترديد إنما هو في اللفظ المسموع. كذا في «المرقاة».
