Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) shook hands with a man, he did not withdraw his hand until the man withdrew his, nor did he turn his face away until the man turned his face, and he was never seen 1 extending his knees in front of a seated companion.

(1) His statement: “never seen extending his knees, etc.”: It is said “knees” here means legs, and extending them means stretching them out. He did not stretch his legs in front of a seated companion. It is also said: It means he did not sit with his knees raised above his companions, as tyrants do, but sat evenly with them. Or it means he did not raise his knees when with a companion, preserving them out of respect. All this reflects his utmost etiquette and teaching his companions. This does not contradict that he sometimes sat with his knees raised in other positions, as it could be in private or with some companions. (As stated in Al-Lama’at)

(۱) قوله : ولم ير مقدما ركتبيه إلخ : قيل : المراد بالركبتين هنا الرجلان وتقمدمهما عبارة عن مدهما، أي لم يكن رسول الله ﷺ يمد رجليه بين يدي جليسه وقيل : معناه لم يكن مقدما ركبتيه في الجلوس على ركب جلسائه، كما يفعله الجبابرة، بل يجلس مستويا في الصف معهم. وقيل : معناه لم يرفع ركبتيه عند من يجالسه، بل يحفظهما تعظيما لجليسه، وكل ذلك كان لفرط أدبه وتعليم أصحابه، ولا ينافي هذا أنه قد كان يجلس رافعا ركبتيه بالاحتباء وغيره؛ لأنه يجوز أن يكون في غير المجلس، بل في الخلوة أو مع بعض الأصحاب. كذا في «اللمعات».

(18) قوله: ولم ير مقدما ركبتيه (اپنے مبارک قدم دراز کئے ہوئے نہیں دیکھا گیا) کہا گیا یہاں رکبتین (گھٹنوں) سے قدم مبارک مراد ہیں، اور آگے بڑھانے سے مراد دراز کرنا ہے یعنی رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہمنشیں کے سامنے اپنے قدم مبارک دراز نہ فرماتے۔ کہا گیا کہ اس کا معنی یہ ہے کہ مجلس میں بیٹھنے والوں کے گھٹنوں سے اوپر آپ اپنے مبارک گھٹنے نہیں رکھتے تھے، جیسا کہ ناکام و جاہ پر لوگ کیا کرتے ہیں بلکہ ان کے ساتھ صف میں برابر تشریف فرما ہوتے۔ اور اس کا مطلب یہ بھی کہا گیا ہے کہ جو لوگ آپ کی محفل میں موجود ہوتے ان کے پاس اپنے قدم مبارک کو دراز نہ فرماتے۔ یہ سب آپ کے انتہائی ادب اور صحابہ کرام کی تعلیم کی خاطر ہے۔ یہ روایت اس کے منافی نہیں کہ آپ کبھی احتباء وغیرہ کے طور پر اپنے گھٹنے مبارک بلند فرما کر تشریف رکھتے کیونکہ ہو سکتا ہے کہ آپ محفل میں نہ ہوں یا خلوت میں ہو یا بعض صحابہ کرام کے ساتھ ہوں۔ (ماخوذ از لمعات)۔
