English

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When Khaybar was conquered, a sheep with poison in it was sent to the Prophet (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Gather for me whoever is here from the Jews.” They were gathered, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to them: “I ask you about something. Will you testify to it?” They said: “Yes, Abu al-Qasim.” He said to them: “Who is your father?” 1 They said: “So-and-so.” He said: “You lied; your father is so-and-so.” They said: “You spoke the truth and hit the mark.” He said: “Will you testify to something if I ask you about it?” They said: “Yes, O Abu al-Qasim, and if we lie to you, you know our lie as you knew it about our father.” He said to them: “Who are the people of the Fire?” They said: “You will be in it briefly, then you will succeed us in it.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Dwell well in it, and by Allah, you will never succeed us in it.” Then he said: “Will you testify to something if I ask you about it?” They said: “Yes, O Abu al-Qasim.” He said: “Did you put poison in this sheep?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “What made you do that?” They said: “We wanted, if you are a liar, to be relieved of you, and if you are truthful, it will not harm you 1.”

Note 1

we wanted,

(1) His statement: who is your father: Meaning your grandfather. Then you will succeed us: With ḍamma on lām and tashdid on nūn or lightened, meaning you will follow us in it. This is on their corrupt claim and false belief that it was true speech and right news. His statement: if we are relieved: Object of “we wanted,” and the conditional response is omitted due to context, meaning: If you are a liar, we are relieved of you, and if you are truthful, it will not harm you, so we benefit from your guidance. The intent is testing, meaning either we learn you are a liar and are relieved of you, or we learn you are a prophet and follow you. It shows they were liars in their claim, establishing the conclusive proof with the manifest miracle. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
