Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrated: I heard 1 Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) being asked, “Whom would the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) have appointed as successor if he had done so?” She said: “Abu Bakr.” They asked: “Then who after Abu Bakr?” She said: “Umar.” They asked: “Then who after Umar?” She said: “Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah.”

(1) The statement “I heard Aishah being asked”: Meaning, while she was asked whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would have appointed as successor, i.e., explicitly as a successor, hypothetically. The statement “She said: Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah”: This indicates Aishah’s belief that Abu Ubaydah was more entitled to the caliphate after the two Shaykhs than the rest of the consultation group. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

(۱) قوله: سمعت عائشة وسئلت : أي والحال أنها سئلت من كان رسول الله ﷺ مستخلفا، أي جاعلا خليفة له لو استخلفه، أي صريحا على الفرض. وقوله: قالت أبو عبيدة بن الجراح ففيه أن اعتقاد عائشة على أن أبا عبيدة كان أولى بالخلافة بعد الشيخين من بقية أصحاب الشورى. كذا في «المرقاة».

(میں نے حضرت عائشہ سے سنا جبکہ اُن سے پوچھا گیا) یعنی جب کہ اُن سے یہ سوال کیا گیا حضرت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بالفرض اگر وضاحت کے ساتھ کسی کو خلیفہ بناتے تو کس صحابی کو مقرر فرماتے، اُنہوں نے فرمایا: ابوعبیدہ بن جراح اس میں یہ دلیل ہے کہ حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا کا عقیدہ یہ تھا کہ ابوعبیدہ رضی اللہ عنہ شیخین کے بعد باقی اصحاب شوریٰ میں خلافت کے زیادہ حقدار تھے۔ (مرقات)
