Abu al-Ushara, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated: He said, “O Messenger of Allah, is slaughter only in the throat or chest?” He said: “If you stabbed it in its thigh, it would suffice for you.” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, and al-Darimi]
Abu Dawud said: This is the slaughter of a “mutaraddiyah” (fallen animal). Al-Tirmidhi said: This is in necessity. 1

Note 1
(1) The statement: “This is in necessity”: Our scholars said: A slaughter not performed is forbidden, per Allah’s saying: Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter (Qur’an 5:3). Emergency slaughter is wounding anywhere on the body, while voluntary slaughter is cutting between the throat and chest. The slaughter veins are the trachea (airway), esophagus (food and drink passage), and two jugular veins. It is permissible to cut any three of them. Thus, in “Al-Mirqat.”
