Note 2
(2) The statement: "Covering his face": Covering the face (taqannu‘) means covering the head and most of the face with a cloak or similar. As stated in Umdat al-Qari. It is said in Ash‘at al-Lam‘at: They differed on covering the face. Some considered it disliked, others permitted it for men when needed, and the majority held it permissible absolutely, citing the action of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his noble companions, may Allah be pleased with them all.
