Chapter on Greeting

Zujajat al-Masabih 4468Volume 4

English

Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Ka‘b narrated that he used to visit Abdullah ibn Umar and go with him to the market. He said: “When we went to the market, Abdullah ibn Umar did not pass by a peddler, a merchant, a poor person, or anyone without greeting them with salaam.” Tufayl said: “One day, I came to Abdullah ibn Umar, and he asked me to accompany him to the market. I said to him, ‘What do you do in the market? You don’t stop to buy, inquire about goods, bargain, or sit in market gatherings. Sit with us here and let’s talk.’ He replied, ‘O big-bellied one!’—Tufayl had a large belly—‘We go to the market for the sake of the greeting, to greet those we meet.’”
