Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “What will it be like when you remain among the dregs of people whose covenants and trustworthiness have become confused, and they differ 1, becoming like this,” and he interlaced his fingers. He said: “What do you command me?” He said: “Hold to what you recognize, abandon what you disapprove of, focus on your own affairs, and avoid the affairs of the masses.”
In another narration: “Stay in your home, control your tongue, take what you recognize, leave what you disapprove of, focus on your own affairs, and leave the affairs of the masses.”

Note 1
(1) His statement: “and they differ” – meaning they mix with one another, and their religious affairs become confused, so the trustworthy cannot be distinguished from the treacherous, nor the righteous from the wicked. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 1
(۱) قوله: واختلفوا إلخ : أي يموج بعضهم في بعض ويلتبس أمر دينهم، فلا يعرف الأمين من الخائن، ولا البر من الفاجر. كذا في «المرقاة».
