who comes to these with one face and to those with another

(1) His statement: “who comes to these with one face and to those with another”: meaning, with a different face, like the hypocrites and talebearers, as stated in Al-Mirqat. In Umdat al-Qari, it is said: This is the forbidden flattery (mudahanah), and he is called two-faced because he shows satisfaction to the people of evil, greeting them with a welcoming and cheerful face, and does the same with the people of truth, mixing with both groups, earning the name of flatterer and deserving severe warning. In another part of Al-Mirqat, it is said: It refers to one who presents himself to a person as a supporter and well-wisher but speaks ill of him in his absence. Alternatively, it means one who acts as a friend to both enemies, praising each while disparaging the other to the other.
