who comes to these with one face and to those with another

In another part of Al-Mirqat, it is said: It refers to one who presents himself to a person as a supporter and well-wisher but speaks ill of him in his absence. Alternatively, it means one who acts as a friend to both enemies, praising each while disparaging the other to the other.

Note 1
(1) His statement: “Let what you know of your own faults prevent you from [focusing on] the faults of others”: meaning, let your awareness of your own shortcomings deter you from focusing on others’ flaws, as narrated by Anas, reported by Ad-Daylami: “Blessed is the one whose own faults preoccupy him from the faults of others.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
