Chapter-heading commentary

let not a people ridicule

(1) His statement: “let not a people ridicule”: Know that joking is lighthearted interaction with others without causing harm. If it reaches the point of harm, it becomes mockery. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames

(2) His statement: “and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames”: Some scholars said that the nicknames meant here are those the person dislikes or that imply criticism. Nicknames that have become like proper names, such as Al-A’mash or Al-A’raj and the like, are permissible if the person does not dislike them. Nicknames that bring praise and are true are not disliked, such as Abu Bakr being called Atiq, Umar called Al-Faruq, Uthman called Dhu An-Nurayn, Ali called Abu Turab, Khalid called the Sword of Allah, and so forth. [As stated in Al-Khazin]

Note 1

do not jest with him

(1) His statement: “do not jest with him”: An-Nawawi said: The prohibited joking is that which is excessive and habitual, as it leads to laughter, hardens the heart, distracts from Allah’s remembrance and reflection on religious matters, often causes harm, breeds resentment, and diminishes dignity and respect. However, joking that is free from these issues is permissible, as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did so rarely for a beneficial purpose, to comfort the person addressed or show kindness, which is a recommended Sunnah. Know this, as it is greatly needed. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

Chapter-heading commentary

Note 1

Note 1

Note 1

you jest with us

(1) His statement: “you jest with us”: Ali Al-Qari said: The apparent reason for their question was that he prohibited them from jesting. Issam, in Sharh Ash-Shamail, said: It is as if they asked whether jesting was exclusive to him, not to be emulated. He responded, “I only speak the truth,” meaning one who maintains truthfulness, avoids lying, and preserves dignity and respect may jest.

Note 1

Note 1

what has the little bird done

(1) His statement: “what has the little bird done”: Abu Hanifah, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad said there is no sanctuary for Madinah as there is for Makkah, so no one is prevented from hunting its game or cutting its trees. At-Tahawi supported their view with this Hadith, as Abu Umair took the little bird from Madinah. Ash-Shafi’i, Malik, and Ahmad said the sanctuary of Madinah is like that of Makkah. [As stated in Al-Urf Ash-Shadhi]

Note 1

Note 1

Do camels give birth to anything but she-camels?

(1) His statement: “Do camels give birth to anything but she-camels?”: The meaning is that if you had reflected, you would not have said that, as every camel is born from a she-camel. This combines kindness with guidance for him and others, indicating that one should reflect on a statement before rejecting it until its depth is understood. [As stated in Al-Mirqat]

Note 1

Hadith 4692

Volume 4

English

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man from the desert named Zahir ibn Haram would bring gifts to the Prophet (ﷺ) from the desert, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would equip him when he wished to leave. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Zahir is our desert, and we are his city.” The Prophet (ﷺ) loved him, though he was unattractive. One day, the Prophet (ﷺ) came to him while he was selling his goods and embraced him from behind, so he could not see him. He said, “Let me go, who is this?” He turned and recognized the Prophet (ﷺ), then kept his back pressed against the Prophet’s chest once he knew him. The Prophet (ﷺ) began saying, “Who will buy this slave?” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, you will find me unsellable.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “But with Allah, you are not unsellable.”

Hadith 4693

When he entered, he reached for her to strike her, saying, “Do I not see you raising your voice to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?” The Prophet (ﷺ) restrained him, and Abu Bakr left angrily. The Prophet (ﷺ) said after Abu Bakr left, “How did you find me saving you from the man?” Abu Bakr stayed away for a few days, then sought permission again and found them reconciled. He said to them, “Include me in your peace as you included me in your conflict.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “We have done so, we have done so.”
