Note 1

The best among you...

(1) The statement: "The best among you..." If it is asked: Which is better—learning the Qur’an or learning Fiqh (jurisprudence)? The answer is: The one occupied with Fiqh is better. This depends on a person’s need, because Fiqh is superior to mere recitation. However, in the time of the Prophet (ﷺ), the reciter was the most knowledgeable in Fiqh, which is why the reciter led the prayer. This is mentioned in ‘Umdat al-Qari’.

Note 1

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Learn the Qur’an and recite it, for the example of one who learns the Qur’an, recites it, and stands by it is like a bag full of musk whose fragrance spreads everywhere. And the example of one who learns it but sleeps while it is in his heart is like a bag tied upon musk."

Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The example of a believer who recites the Qur’an is like a citron—its fragrance is pleasant, and its taste is pleasant. The example of a believer who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date—it has no fragrance, but its taste is sweet. The example of a hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a colocynth—it has no fragrance, and its taste is bitter. And the example of a hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like a basil—its fragrance is pleasant, but its taste is bitter." [Agreed upon] In another narration: "The believer who recites the Qur’an and acts upon it is like a citron, and the believer who does not recite the Qur’an but acts upon it is like a date."

He said: "Why does not one of you go to the mosque and learn or recite two verses from the Book of Allah? He said, ‘Have they really done so?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "There will indeed be trials." I asked, ‘What is the way out of them, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘The Book of Allah. In it is the news of what came before you, the information of what will come after you, and the judgment between you. It is decisive, not frivolous. Whoever abandons it out of arrogance, Allah will break him, and whoever seeks guidance elsewhere, Allah will misguide him. It is Allah’s strong rope, the Wise Reminder, and the Straight Path. It is that by which desires are not swayed, tongues are not confused, scholars are never satiated, it does not wear out despite repetition, and its wonders never cease. It is that which the jinn did not hesitate to declare when they heard it: ‘Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’an that guides to righteousness, so we have believed in it.’ (Al-Jinn: 1-2) Whoever speaks by it speaks the truth, whoever acts by it is rewarded, whoever judges by it is just, and whoever calls to it is guided to the Straight Path.’"

Note 1

Note 1

Respond to Allah and the Messenger...

(1) The statement: "Respond to Allah and the Messenger..." Al-Hafiz said in Al-Fath: "The scholars ‘Abdul Wahhab and Abu al-Walid from the Malikis held that responding to the Prophet (ﷺ) during prayer is obligatory, and neglecting it is sinful—a ruling specific to the Prophet (ﷺ). The Shafi’is also hold this view, though they differ on whether the prayer becomes invalid or not." I say: As for the Hanafis, al-Tahtawi said in Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah: "It is obligatory for the one praying to respond to the Prophet (ﷺ), and there is no disagreement that the prayer becomes invalid if he does not, as mentioned by Badr in his Tafsir of Surah Al-Anfal."

Note 2

Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin

(2) The statement: "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin" indicates that the Basmalah is not part of Surah Al-Fatihah, otherwise he would have said, "Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim, Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-‘Alamin."

Note 1

Note 2

Note 1

Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "O Abu al-Mundhir, do you know which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest with you?" He said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (ﷺ) repeated the question, and Ubayy replied: "Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa al-Hayy al-Qayyum (Ayat al-Kursi)." The Prophet (ﷺ) struck his chest and said: "By Allah, may knowledge be pleasant for you, O Abu al-Mundhir!"

Note 1

The greatest...

(1) The statement: "The greatest..." It is mentioned in Al-‘Alamgiriyyah: "Some Surahs and verses are superior, like Ayat al-Kursi, in that their recitation carries greater reward and awakens the heart. However, it is best not to prefer some parts of the Qur’an over others at all—this is the preferred view."

Note 1

Note 1

Hadith 2592

Volume 2

English

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entrusted me with guarding the Ramadan charity. A man came and began taking handfuls of food, so I seized him and said, ‘I will take you to the Messenger of Allah!’ He said, ‘I am needy, with a family in severe hardship.’ I released him. The next morning, the Prophet (ﷺ) asked, ‘What did your prisoner do last night?’ I explained, and he said, ‘He lied to you and will return.’ Knowing he would return as the Prophet (ﷺ) predicted, I caught him again. He pleaded, ‘Release me, I will not return,’ but I seized him a third time. He said, ‘Let me teach you words that will benefit you: Recite Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping, and you will have a protector from Allah, and no Satan will come near you till morning.’ I released him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ‘He told you the truth though he is a liar. Do you know whom you were speaking to for three nights? That was a Satan.’"

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: "While Jibril was sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ), he heard a sound above him. He lifted his head and said, ‘This is a gate of heaven opened today, never opened before. An angel descended and said, "Rejoice in two lights given to you, never given to any prophet before: Al-Fatihah and the closing verses of Surah Al-Baqarah. You will not recite a single letter of them without being granted its reward."’"
