On his authority: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever performs a prayer in which he does not recite the Mother of the Book, it is incomplete, except behind the imam." 1

١١٤١ - وَعَنْهُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ صَلَّى صَلَاةَ لَا يَقْرَأُ فِيْهَا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَهِيَ خِدَاجٌ، إِلَّا وَرَاءَ الْإِمَامِ».1 رَوَاهُ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ.

اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا ہے کہ جو شخص بغیر سورہ فاتحہ کے نماز پڑھتے تو اس کی نماز ناقص
ہے لیکن یہ حکم اس مقتدی کے لئے نہیں ہے جو امام کے پیچھے نماز پڑھ رہا ہے۔ (اس کو تو خاموش رہنا
ضروری ہے۔ (اس کی روایت بیہقی نے کی ہے۔)

(1) His saying: "Except behind the imam": Sheikh Al-Janjuhawi said that the narrations regarding recitation behind the imam cannot be used as evidence to obligate the follower's recitation. Initially, the follower was permitted to recite in prayer, then this was abrogated while allowing the recitation of Al-Fatihah, and then it was completely abrogated. This is mentioned in Aujaz Al-Masalik.
