English

Abu Ubaydah reported: Abdullah ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Whoever follows a funeral should carry all sides of the bier, for this is from the Sunnah. Then, if he wishes, he may volunteer, and if he wishes, he may leave it." Narrated by Ibn Majah, and its chain is Jayyid but Mursal] Al-Bayhaqi and At-Tayalisi narrated from him, and Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated from Abu Ad-Darda' something similar. In a narration by Abdur Razzaq from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, "Whoever carries the funeral from all four sides has fulfilled his obligation." 1

Note 1

All sides of the bier.

(1) The statement: "All sides of the bier." What is narrated that he (ﷺ) carried the funeral of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh between two poles is weak in its chain. An-Nawawi said: "There is a confirmed text from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) regarding carrying it between two poles." This is mentioned in "Sharh Al-Munyah."

Note 1
