It is narrated from Sufyan 1 that Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Ka'b: "Who are the people of knowledge?" Ka'b replied: "Those who act upon what they know." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) then asked: "What causes knowledge to depart from the hearts of the scholars?" Ka'b answered: "Greed."

٢٤٩ - وَعَنْ سُفْيَانَ: أَنَّ1 عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَابِ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ لِكَعْبٍ (رضي الله عنه): مَنْ أَرْبَابُ الْعِلْمِ؟ قَالَ: الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُوْنَ بِمَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ. قَالَ: فَمَا أَخْرَجَ الْعِلْمَ مِنْ قُلُوْبِ الْعُلَمَاءِ؟ قَالَ: الطَّمْعُ رَوَاهُ الدَّارِمِيُّ.

ان باتوں پر عمل کرتے ہیں، جن کو وہ جانتے ہیں۔
عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے فرمایا کہ پھر وہ کیا چیز ہے جو علماء کے دل سے علم کو نکال دیتی ہے؟ کعب
رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: طمع (حرص)۔ (دارمی نے اس کی روایت کی ہے۔)
