Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say, "Whoever enters Ihram for Hajj or ‘Umrah from Al-Masjid al-Aqsa to Al-Masjid al-Haram will have their past and future sins forgiven, or Paradise will be granted to them." [Narrated by Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and Bayhaqi] 'Ali al-Qari said its wording suggests it is hasan. Hakim reported in Al-Mustadrak from 'Abdullah ibn Salamah al-Muradi that 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), when asked about "Complete Hajj and ‘Umrah for Allah" (2:196), said: "Enter Ihram from your homes." Hakim graded it sahih per Bukhari and Muslim’s standards.

Note 1

From Al-Masjid al-Aqsa...

(1) The statement: "From Al-Masjid al-Aqsa..." – This indicates greater reward for entering Ihram from farther distances. In our school, early Ihram (before reaching the Miqat) is superior if one can avoid violations; otherwise, entering Ihram at the Miqat is better. However, entering Ihram before Hajj months is disliked (makruh) according to us, Malik, and Ahmad, contrary to Shafi'i’s view. Al-Mirqat explains this. Chapter of Ihram and the Phrases of Talbiyah Allah the Exalted says: "And proclaim to the people the Hajj; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass." (22:27) And His saying: "And complete the Hajj and ‘Umrah for Allah." (2:196)

(1) Statement on Ihram: Ihram is not valid without intention and Talbiyah according to our school. One does not enter Ihram by intention alone without Talbiyah. These two actions initiate the sacred state, constituting Ihram legally. Al-Bahr ar-Ra'iq and Al-'Inayah affirm this.

Note 2

Proclaim the Hajj

(2) Statement on "Proclaim the Hajj": It is narrated that Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was commanded to call people to Hajj after building the Ka'bah. He stood on Maqam Ibrahim or Mount Abu Qubays and proclaimed: "O people! Your Lord has built a House and commanded you to perform Hajj to it." Allah made his voice reach all whom He decreed would perform Hajj, and they responded from their ancestors' loins and wombs: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk." Al-Hidayah references this in its chapter on Ihram.

Note 3

Complete the Hajj

(3) Statement on "Complete the Hajj": Al-Hidayah states: The Qur'an mentions Qiran (combined Hajj and ‘Umrah) in this verse, as it refers to initiating Ihram for both from one's residence—sustaining the state until completion. This makes Qiran superior to Tamattu'.

Note 1
