Chapter: The Story of the Farewell Pilgrimage

Zujajat al-Masabih 3009Volume 2

English

Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stayed in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj. Then, in the tenth year, he announced to the people that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would perform Hajj. A large number of people came to Madinah, all seeking to follow the Prophet (ﷺ) and emulate his actions. We set out with him until we reached Dhul-Hulayfah, where Asma’ bint ‘Umays gave birth to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr. She sent a message to the Prophet (ﷺ) asking, "What should I do?" He replied, "Perform Ghusl, secure yourself with a cloth, and enter Ihram." The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed in the mosque, then mounted Al-Qaswa’. When his she-camel stood upright at Al-Bayda’, I looked as far as I could see in front of him, to his right, left, and behind him—riders and pedestrians everywhere, with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) among us. The Qur’an was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did, we did the same. He began the Talbiyah with Tawhid: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Sharika Laka Labbayk, Inna al-Hamda wa an-Ni‘mata Laka wa al-Mulk, La Sharika Lak." The people also recited this Talbiyah, and the Prophet (ﷺ) did not object. He remained steadfast in his Talbiyah. Jabir said: "We only intended Hajj and did not know about ‘Umrah." When we reached the House (Ka‘bah) with him, he touched the Corner (Black Stone), performed Ramal (brisk walking) for three rounds, and walked normally for four. Then he proceeded to the Station of Ibrahim and recited: "And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer." (Al-Baqarah 2:125). He prayed two Rak‘ahs, placing the Station between himself and the Ka‘bah. In another narration: "He recited Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah Al-Kafirun in the two Rak‘ahs." Then he returned to the Corner, touched it, exited through the gate to As-Safa, and upon nearing it, recited: "Indeed, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." (Al-Baqarah 2:158). He said, "I begin with what Allah began." He ascended As-Safa until he saw the Ka‘bah, faced the Qiblah, declared Allah’s Oneness, and said: "La ilaha illa Allah, He fulfilled His promise, supported His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." He supplicated between these phrases three times, then descended to Al-Marwah. When he reached the valley, he hastened until ascending again, then walked to Al-Marwah and repeated the same actions as at As-Safa. At the end of his Sa‘i, he called out from Al-Marwah to the people below: "If I had known beforehand what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals and would have made it an ‘Umrah. So, whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal should exit Ihram and make it an ‘Umrah." Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju‘shum stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is this for this year only or forever?" The Prophet (ﷺ) intertwined his fingers and said, "‘Umrah has been incorporated into Hajj—no, forever, forever!" ‘Ali arrived from Yemen with the Prophet’s sacrificial animals. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked him, "What did you say when you assumed Ihram?" He replied, "I said: O Allah, I assume Ihram as Your Messenger has." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I have the sacrificial animals with me, so do not exit Ihram." Jabir said: The total sacrificial animals brought by ‘Ali from Yemen and those the Prophet (ﷺ) brought were one hundred. All the people exited Ihram and shortened their hair except the Prophet (ﷺ) and those who had sacrificial animals. On the Day of Tarwiyah, they headed to Mina and assumed Ihram for Hajj. The Prophet (ﷺ) rode and prayed Dhuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib, ‘Isha, and Fajr there. He stayed briefly until sunrise, then ordered a tent to be pitched for him at Namirah. The Prophet (ﷺ) proceeded, while the Quraysh thought he would stop at Al-Mash‘ar al-Haram as they did in Jahiliyyah. But he continued until ‘Arafah, where his tent had been set up. He stayed there until midday, then ordered Al-Qaswa’ to be prepared. He rode to the valley and delivered a sermon: "Your blood and wealth are sacred to one another, like the sanctity of this day, in this month, in this land. Every practice of Jahiliyyah is abolished beneath my feet. The blood feuds of Jahiliyyah are abolished, and the first blood feud I abolish is that of Rabi‘ah ibn al-Harith, who was nursed among Banu Sa‘d and killed by Hudhayl. The usury of Jahiliyyah is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is that of ‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib—it is all abolished. Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them under Allah’s trust and made their intimacy lawful with Allah’s word. They have the right over you to good treatment, and you have the right over them that they do not allow anyone you dislike on your bedding. If they do so, discipline them lightly. They are entitled to their provision and clothing with kindness." "I have left among you what, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah. You will be asked about me, so what will you say?" They replied, "We bear witness that you have conveyed, fulfilled, and advised." He raised his index finger to the sky and pointed to the people, saying, "O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness." three times. Then he gave the Adhan and Iqamah and prayed Dhuhr, then ‘Asr without any voluntary prayers in between. He rode until reaching the standing place at ‘Arafah, positioning his she-camel toward the rocks with the pedestrians in front and facing the Qiblah. He remained standing until sunset, when the yellow light faded and the sun had completely set. He placed Usamah behind him. [Narrated by Muslim] In another narration from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr: "We departed with Ibn ‘Umar until we reached Muzdalifah, where he led us in Maghrib and ‘Isha with one Iqamah. Then he turned to us and said, ‘This is how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed with us in this place.’" At-Tirmidhi narrated similarly and said: "This Hadith is Hasan Sahih, and this is the practice of the scholars: they do not pray Maghrib before reaching Muzdalifah. When they arrive, they combine Maghrib and ‘Isha with one Iqamah without voluntary prayers in between. This is the view of Sufyan ath-Thawri and others."

Chapter-heading commentary

And seven when you have returned

(1) His statement: "And seven when you have returned"—the meaning of "return" in the verse refers metaphorically to completing the Hajj rituals, as completion is the cause of returning home. Thus, the effect is mentioned while intending the cause metaphorically. It does not mean literally returning to one’s homeland. Al-Shafi‘i took it literally, so he did not permit fasting these days in Makkah. Our scholars (Hanafis) shifted from the literal to the metaphorical meaning due to an agreed-upon subsidiary issue: if someone had no homeland to return to and was continuously traveling, they would still be obligated to fast based on this text. For them, only "returning from the rituals" applies. The summary is that Al-Shafi‘i’s interpretation is not universally applicable, so the metaphorical meaning is necessitated. (Al-Bahr al-Ra’iq, Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, summarized). In Badhl al-Majhud, it is said: Regarding fasting the seven days, the conditions for their validity are: Forming the intention at night, Preceding them with the three days (of Hajj), Fasting the seven days after the Days of Tashreeq, Permissibility to fast them in Makkah after completing Hajj, though it is preferable to fast them after returning home to avoid disagreement with the Shafi‘is.

Note 1

He stayed in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj

(1) His statement: "He stayed in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj"—this was because Makkah was under the control of the disbelievers at that time (Badhl al-Majhud).

Note 2

Then he announced

(2) His statement: "Then he announced"—this indicates the recommendation for leaders to inform people of important matters so they can prepare (An-Nawawi).

Note 3

All seeking to follow the Prophet (ﷺ)

(3) His statement: "All seeking to follow the Prophet (ﷺ)"—this shows they all performed Qiran Hajj (combining Hajj and ‘Umrah), as the Prophet (ﷺ) did, and they did not oppose him. Anas said, "I was riding behind Abu Talha, and they were calling out for both Hajj and ‘Umrah together." [Bukhari]

Note 4

Perform Ghusl

(4) His statement: "Perform Ghusl"—this indicates the recommendation of Ghusl for Ihram, even for a postpartum woman, though for cleanliness (Fath al-Qadir).

Note 5

He prayed two Rak‘ahs

(5) His statement: "He prayed two Rak‘ahs"—this indicates the recommendation of two Rak‘ahs for Ihram (Fath al-Qadir).

Note 6

When his she-camel stood upright

(6) His statement: "When his she-camel stood upright"—in Al-Hidayah, it is said: "The Talbiyah should be recited after the prayer, as the Prophet (ﷺ) did. If one recites it after mounting, it is valid, but the first is superior."

Note 7

Riders and pedestrians

(7) His statement: "Riders and pedestrians"—this proves the permissibility of performing Hajj on foot or riding. Scholars differ on which is better: Malik, Ash-Shafi‘i, and most scholars say riding is better, following the Prophet (ﷺ), as it helps with the rituals. Dawud said walking is better due to its hardship, but this is incorrect, as hardship is not the objective (An-Nawawi).

Note 8

He began the Talbiyah with Tawhid

(8) His statement: "He began the Talbiyah with Tawhid"—meaning the Talbiyah includes Tawhid and negation of Shirk (Badhl al-Majhud).

Note 9

The people also recited this Talbiyah

(9) His statement: "The people also recited this Talbiyah"—this refers to the people adding more phrases of remembrance and praise, as Ibn ‘Umar would say: "Labbayk, Sa‘dayk, wa ar-Raghba’ Ilayk wa al-‘Amal." (Badhl al-Majhud).

Note 10

We only intended Hajj

(10) His statement: "We only intended Hajj"—this supports the view that Qiran is superior, as the Companions initially only knew Hajj (Al-Luma‘at).

Note 11

He recited Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah Al-Kafirun

(11) His statement: "He recited Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah Al-Kafirun"—after Al-Fatihah, in one Rak‘ah "Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad" and in the other "Qul Ya Ayyuha al-Kafirun" (At-Tibi).

Note 12

At the end of his Sa‘i

(12) His statement: "At the end of his Sa‘i"—the Companions did not differ in reporting the Prophet’s actions but in interpreting them. Some said he performed Ifrad (Hajj alone), others Tamattu‘ (Hajj and ‘Umrah with a break), and others Qiran (combined). (Al-Musawwa).

Note 13

If I had known beforehand

(13) His statement: "If I had known beforehand"—meaning if he had known the outcome, he would not have brought sacrificial animals. This was to clarify that those without animals could exit Ihram (Al-‘Inayah).

Note 14

Should exit Ihram and make it an ‘Umrah

(14) His statement: "Should exit Ihram and make it an ‘Umrah"—scholars differ on whether this ruling is specific to the Companions or general. Ahmad and some Zahiris say it is general, while Malik, Ash-Shafi‘i, and Abu Hanifah say it was specific to them (An-Nawawi).

Note 15

Make it an ‘Umrah

(15) His statement: "Make it an ‘Umrah"—the Hanafis prohibit converting Hajj to ‘Umrah, as this was specific to that year to oppose Jahiliyyah practices (Al-Durr al-Mukhtar).

Note 16

‘Umrah has been incorporated into Hajj—forever

(16) His statement: "‘Umrah has been incorporated into Hajj—forever"—Ash-Shafi‘i argues this means one Tawaf and Sa‘i suffice for Qiran, while Abu Hanifah says both must be performed separately (Al-‘Inayah).

Note 17

I assume Ihram as Your Messenger has

(17) His statement: "I assume Ihram as Your Messenger has"—Ash-Shafi‘i permits conditional Ihram (e.g., "I assume Ihram as Zaid did"), but other scholars require specifying Hajj or ‘Umrah (‘Umdat al-Qari).

Note 18

I have the sacrificial animals with me

(18) His statement: "I have the sacrificial animals with me"—this indicates Qiran, as the Hadi (sacrificial animal) is obligatory only for Qiran or Tamattu‘ (Al-Jawhar an-Naqi).

Note 19

On the Day of Tarwiyah

(19) His statement: "On the Day of Tarwiyah"—one assumes Ihram for Hajj on this day, as the people of Makkah do (Al-Hidayah).

Note 20

They assumed Ihram for Hajj

(20) His statement: "They assumed Ihram for Hajj"—this can be done from the mosque (preferable) or anywhere within the Haram (Al-Hidayah).

Note 21

His tent had been set up

(21) His statement: "His tent had been set up"—this proves the permissibility of shading oneself during Ihram (An-Nawawi).

Note 22

He stayed there

(22) His statement: "He stayed there"—the best place to stand at ‘Arafah is near Jabal ar-Rahmah, though the three Imams say Namirah is better (Al-Mi‘raj).

Note 23

The valley

(23) His statement: "The valley"—this refers to ‘Uranah, which is not part of ‘Arafah (Al-Maraqi).

Note 24

He delivered a sermon

(24) His statement: "He delivered a sermon"—this was in the mosque at Namirah (Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar).

Note 25

He prayed ‘Asr

(25) His statement: "He prayed ‘Asr"—this was combined with Dhuhr at its time, as a ritual act (Hanafi view) or due to travel (Shafi‘i view) (Al-Maraqi).

Note 26

Without any voluntary prayers

(26) His statement: "Without any voluntary prayers"—this ensures continuity between the two prayers (Al-Maraqi).

Note 27

He rode

(27) His statement: "He rode"—it is preferable for the Imam to stand while riding, as it facilitates supplication (Ar-Radd al-Muhtar).

Note 28

With one Iqamah

(28) His statement: "With one Iqamah"—the single Adhan suffices as it announces the time, while the single Iqamah is for ‘Isha since it is in its time (‘Umdat ar-Ri‘ayah).

Note 29

At-Tirmidhi narrated similarly

(29) His statement: "At-Tirmidhi narrated similarly"—he said: "The practice is not to pray Maghrib before Muzdalifah. When arriving, combine the prayers with one Iqamah without voluntary prayers in between—this is the view of Sufyan ath-Thawri."

Note 10

Note 11

Note 12

Note 13

Note 14

Note 15

Note 16

Note 17

Note 18

Note 19
