English

Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib narrated: A Muslim and a Jew brought a dispute to Umar, and he saw the right was with the Jew, so Umar ruled in his favor. The Jew said to him: By Allah, you have judged with the truth. Umar struck him with a whip and said: How do you know? The Jew said: By Allah, we find in the Torah that no judge rules with the truth except that an angel is on his right and an angel on his left, guiding and directing him to the truth as long as he upholds it. When he abandons the truth, they ascend and leave him.
