Anas narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his companions set out, preempting the polytheists to Badr, and the polytheists came. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Rise to a Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth. Umayr ibn al-Humam said: Excellent, excellent! The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: What prompts you to say ‘excellent, excellent’? He said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, only hope that I be among its people. He said: You are among its people. Umayr took dates from his quiver and began eating them, then said: If I live to finish these dates, that is a long life. He threw the dates he had, fought them, and was killed.
