Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has prescribed excellence in all things. So when you kill, kill well, and when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and ease his slaughter.” 3

Note 3

Let one of you sharpen his blade and ease his slaughter

(3) The statement: “Let one of you sharpen his blade and ease his slaughter”: Thus, in “Al-Durr al-Mukhtar,” it is recommended to sharpen the blade before laying down the animal, and it is disliked afterward, as is dragging it by its leg to the slaughter place or slaughtering from the nape if it remains alive until the veins are cut; otherwise, it is not permissible as it dies without slaughter. In “Al-Mirqat,” it is recommended not to sharpen in the animal’s presence, not to slaughter one in another’s presence, nor to drag it to the slaughter place. Our scholars said: Skinning before it cools is disliked, as is “nakh” (reaching the spinal cord, a white vein in the neck’s bone). Some say “nakh” means extending the head to expose the slaughter place or breaking the neck before it calms, all disliked for causing unnecessary torment to the animal.
