Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Hasten 1 to do good deeds before trials like patches of dark night. A man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by evening, or a believer in the evening and a disbeliever by morning, selling his religion for a portion of the world.”

Note 1
(1) His statement: “Hasten to do good deeds” – the meaning is: Hurry to perform righteous deeds before the arrival of dark trials of killing, plundering, and discord among Muslims in matters of the world and religion, for you will not be able to perform deeds perfectly in them. The metaphor illustrates the trials’ dreadful and severe nature, their unknown causes, and the lack of a clear path to escape or purpose. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
