Chapter on Signs Before the Hour and Mention of the Dajjal

Zujajat al-Masabih 5266Volume 4

English

Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “No prophet after Noah came but that he warned his people of the Dajjal, and I warn you of him.” He described him to us and said: “Perhaps some of you who have seen me or heard my words will encounter him 1. They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, how will our hearts be at that time?’ He said: ‘Like they are today 3—or better.’”

Commentary and footnotes (6)

Note 1

will encounter him

(1) His statement: “will encounter him”: It is said this refers to Al-Khidr. Others said: Some long-lived jinn. (As stated in Al-Kawkab ad-Durri) It is also said in Al-Mirqat: This suggests Al-Khidr’s survival.

Note 2

heard my words

(2) His statement: “heard my words”: This means receiving my hadith, even after some time. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 3

like they are today

(3) His statement: “like they are today”: Meaning like your hearts now. The narrator’s explanation, “meaning today—or better,” indicates that his sorcery does not affect the hearts of believers, though it may create illusions in their eyes that are not certain. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 1

Note 2
