Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Solomon said: ‘I will go to ninety women tonight’—in another narration, ‘one hundred women’—‘each of whom will give birth 1 to a knight who will fight in the cause of Allah.’ An angel said to him: ‘Say: If Allah wills,’ but he did not say it and forgot. He went to them, but none conceived except one woman, who gave birth to half a man. By the One in Whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, had he said, ‘If Allah wills,’ they would have all fought as knights in the cause of Allah.”

(1) His statement: “will give birth to a knight who will fight in the cause of Allah”: This was a good intention, but it was not conditioned on Allah’s will. His statement: “He did not say it” means he sufficed with what was in his heart without expressing it. His statement: “Had he said, ‘If Allah wills,’ they would have fought” indicates that whoever intends to perform an action should say, “If Allah wills,” after stating their intention, for blessing, optimism, and ease in that action, as Allah said: “And never say of anything, ‘I will do that tomorrow,’ except [saying], ‘If Allah wills’” [Al-Kahf: 23-24].
