Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to visit Umm Haram bint Milhan (may Allah be pleased with her), who was married to Ubadah ibn As-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him). One day, he visited her, and she fed him, then sat delousing his head. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell asleep, then woke up laughing. She said: “What makes you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “People from my nation were shown to me, fighting in the path of Allah, riding the middle of this sea, like kings on thrones, or resembling kings on thrones.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me one of them.” He prayed for her, then put his head down and slept. He woke up laughing again. I said: “What makes you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “People from my nation were shown to me, fighting in the path of Allah, as I said the first time.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me one of them.” He said: “You are among the first.” Umm Haram (may Allah be pleased with her) sailed the sea during the time of Mu‘awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and when she disembarked, she was thrown from her mount and departed from this world.

(1) His statement: “Umm Haram bint Milhan,” with a kasra on the mim, refers to Ibn Khalid. She was Anas’ aunt by lineage, and she and her mother, Umm Sulaim, were aunts of the Prophet (ﷺ) by suckling or lineage. Nawawi said: Scholars agree she was a mahram to him, but differ on how. Ibn Abdul Barr and others said she was his aunt by suckling. Others said she was an aunt to his father or grandfather Abdul Muttalib, and her mother was from Banu Najjar. The reason for his visits was mentioned earlier in the hadith about her sister Umm Sulaim, with further clarification, (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

(2) His statement: “riding the middle of this sea,” with an open tha’ and ba’, means its center or majority. His statement: “like kings on thrones, or resembling kings on thrones,” likely indicates the narrator’s uncertainty. It is either a state or a description of an omitted verbal noun, meaning riding as kings on thrones or riding like the riding of kings on thrones. At-Tibi said: The middle of the sea was likened to the earth’s surface, and the ship to a throne, with their sitting on it resembling kings on their thrones, indicating their determination and vigor in this great matter, (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

(3) His statement: “during the time of Mu‘awiyah,” means during Mu‘awiyah’s governorship in the expedition to Cyprus during Uthman’s caliphate in the year 28 AH, as agreed by most scholars and historians, as mentioned by As-Suyuti. This does not contradict her death occurring during Uthman’s caliphate, (As stated in Al-Mirqat and Al-Lama‘at)

(۱) قوله : أم حرام بنت ملحان: بكسر الميم، وهو ابن خالد، وهي خالة أنس نسبا، وهي وأمه أم سليم من خالات النبي ﷺ رضاعا أو نسبا. قال النووي: اتفق العلماء على أنها كانت محرما له ، واختلفوا في كيفية ذلك، فقال ابن عبد البر وغيره كانت إحدى خالاته من الرضاعة. وقال آخرون: بل كانت خالة لأبيه أو لجده عبد المطلب، وكانت أمه من بني النجار، وقد سبق ذكر وجه الدخول عليها في حديث أختها أم سليم مع زيادة تحقيق فتذكر. كذا في «المرقاة».

(۲) قوله: يركبون ثبج هذا البحر : بفتح مثلثة وموحدة فجيم، أي وسطه ومعظمه. وقوله : «ملوكا على الأسرة أو مثل الملوك على الأسرة الظاهر أن «أو» شك من الراوي، وهو إما حال أو صفة مصدر محذوف، أي يركبون ملوكا على الأسرة أو ركوبا مثل ركوب الملوك على الأسرة. قال الطيبي: شبه ثبج البحر بظهر الأرض والسفينة بالسرير، وجعل الجلوس عليها مشابها لجلوس الملوك على أسرتهم إيذانا بأنهم بذالون لأنفسهم ويركبون هذا الأمر العظيم مع وفور نشاطهم وتمكنهم من مناهم كالملوك على أسرتهم. كذا في «المرقاة».

(۳) قوله في زمن معاوية: أي في أيام ولاية معاوية في غزاة قبرس في خلافة عثمان سنة ثمان وعشرين، وعليه أكثر العلماء وأهل السير، كذا ذكر السيوطي، فلا ينافي ما تقدم من أن موتها في خلافة عثمان. التقطته من «المرقاة» واللمعات».

(12) قولہ : ام حرام بنت ملحان۔ میم کو زیر (کسرہ) ملحان ابن خالد ہیں اور یہ حضرت انس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی نسبی خالہ ہیں یہ اور ام سلیم جو حضرت انس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی والدہ ہیں دونوں نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی رضاعی اور نسبی خالائیں ہیں اور امام نووی فرماتے ہیں : علماء کا اس بات پر اتفاق ہے کہ ام حرام حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے لئے محرم تھیں البتہ اس کی کیفیت میں اختلاف ہے۔ علامہ ابن عبدالبر اور دیگر علماء فرماتے ہیں ان میں سے ایک خالہ رضاعی تھیں اور آپ کی والدہ قبیلہ بنی نجار کی تھیں اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا آپ کے پاس تشریف لانے کی وجہ ان کی بہن ام سلیم کی حدیث شریف میں مزید تحقیق کے ساتھ گزر چکا ہے اسکو یاد رکھو!۔ (مرقات)۔ قولہ : يركبون ثبج هذا البحر۔ (درمیان سمندر میں سواری کر رہے تھے) ثاء اور باء کو زبر ہے اور آخر میں جیم ہے، اس کے معنی درمیان اور عظیم اور اکثر حصہ ہے۔ وقولہ : ملوكاً على الاسرة او مثل الملوك على الاسرة (شاہی تختوں پر بیٹھے ہوئے شاہی تختوں پر بادشاہوں کی طرح ظاہر ہے اس میں لفظ ”او“ راوی کے شک کے لئے ہے۔ اور ترکیب میں حال ہے یا مصدر محذوف کی صفت ہے یعنی وہ بادشاہوں کی طرح تختوں پر بیٹھے ہوئے یا تختوں پر بادشاہوں کے سوار ہونے کی طرح سوار ہوکر۔ علامہ طیبی فرماتے ہیں سمندر کے درمیانی حصہ کو زین سے تشبیہ دی گئی اور کشتی کو تخت سے تشبیہ دی گئی اور اس پر بیٹھنے کو بادشاہوں کے شاہی تختوں پر بیٹھنے سے تشبیہ دی گئی اس میں اس امر کا اعلان ہے کہ وہ حضرات ہر قسم کی مشقت برداشت کریں گے۔ اور پورے جوش وخروش کے ساتھ بادشاہوں کی طرح جو اپنے شاہی تختوں پر بیٹھے ہوتے ہیں اس امر عظیم کی سواری کریں گے۔ (مرقات)۔ (13) قوله : في زمن معاوية الخ (حضرت معاویہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی گورنری کے زمانہ میں) جنگ قبرس حضرت سیدنا عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ کی خلافت کے دور میں حضرت معاویہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے دور گورنری 28ہجری جنگ قبرس میں یہ واقعہ ہوا اور اکثر علماء اور اہل سیر کا قول یہی ہے۔ امام سیوطی رحمۃ اللہ علیہ نے ذکر کیا ہے، سابق میں ذکر کردہ قول ”یہ واقعہ سیدنا عثمان غنی رضی اللہ عنہ کے دور خلافت میں واقع ہوا ہے“ ان دونوں اقوال میں کوئی منافات نہیں ہے۔ (ماخوذ از مرقات ولمعات)۔
