Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “No one has a favor 1 over us that we have not repaid, except Abu Bakr, for he has a favor over us that Allah will repay him for on the Day of Resurrection. No one’s wealth has benefited me as much as Abu Bakr’s wealth. If I were to take a close friend, I would have taken Abu Bakr as a close friend. Indeed, your companion is the close friend of Allah.”

Note 1
(1) His statement “favor”: meaning giving and benevolence. His statement “we have repaid” is in most versions with a ya’ from sufficiency. In some, it is “we have rewarded” with a hamzah after the fa’, meaning we have recompensed. The latter meaning is more fitting for the context. The first meaning has no clear basis. (As stated in Al-Mirqat) The Shaykh said in Al-Lama’at: The first meaning also reduces to the second. Likewise, his statement “He will repay him.”
Note 1
