Zujajat al-Masabih 5864Volume 5

English

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called Ali on the day 1 of Ta’if and spoke privately with him. The people said: ‘His private conversation with his cousin was long.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘I did not initiate the private conversation 2, but Allah did.’”

Commentary and footnotes (4)

Note 1

the day of Ta’if

(1) His statement “the day of Ta’if”: The commentator said: Meaning the day the Prophet (ﷺ) sent Ali to Ta’if, and he spoke privately with him, from the verb of private conversation, meaning he confided in him. “The people said”: meaning the hypocrites or common companions. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 2

I did not initiate the private conversation, but Allah did

(2) His statement “I did not initiate the private conversation, but Allah did”: meaning I conveyed to him what Allah commanded me to convey in private. Thus, Allah initiated the conversation, not me. This is similar to Allah’s statement: “You did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw” [Qur’an 8:17]. It appears that the matter discussed privately was worldly secrets related to religious news, such as matters of expeditions. This is supported by Bukhari’s narration where Ali (may Allah honor his face) was asked: “Do you have anything not in the Qur’an?” He said: “By the One Who split the seed and created the soul, we have nothing but what is in the Qur’an, except understanding given to a man in his Book and what is in the document.” It was asked: “What is in the document?” He said: “Reason and freeing captives.” (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

Note 1
