Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out one night and found Abu Bakr praying in a soft voice. Then he passed by Umar, who was praying in a loud voice. When they both gathered with the Prophet (peace be upon him), he said: 'O Abu Bakr, I passed by you while you were praying in a soft voice.' Abu Bakr said: 'I made audible to the One I was supplicating, O Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Umar: 'I passed by you while you were praying in a loud voice.' Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I was waking the drowsy and driving away Satan.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'O Abu Bakr, raise your voice slightly,' and to Umar, he said: 'Lower your voice slightly.'"
