Chapter on The Obligation of Friday Prayer

Zujajat al-Masabih 1797Volume 1

English

Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami reported: "Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘There is no Friday prayer or Eid prayer except in a central city.’" 3 [Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah with a sahih chain, as a mawquf narration] Abd al-Razzaq, Al-Bayhaqi, Abu Ubaid in Al-Gharib, and Al-Marwazi in Kitab al-Jumu’ah narrated similar mawquf reports. A mawquf narration in such cases is equivalent to a marfu’ narration. Al-Allamah Al-Ayni said: ‘Abu Zayd claimed in Al-Asrar that Muhammad ibn al-Hasan narrated it as marfu’ from Mu’adh and Suraqah ibn Malik. Al-Nawawi said: The Hadith of Ali is weak, and its chain is weak and disconnected. However, it seems he was unaware of the narration through Jarir from Mansur, which has a sahih chain.’

Note 3

This means that Friday prayer is only valid in a central city, based on these narrations. This is because the Prophet’s city (Madinah) had many surrounding villages, and it is not reported that he ordered Friday prayer to be held there. This is mentioned in Sharh al-Nuqayah.
