It is narrated from Jareer (may Allah be pleased with him) that: We were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in the early part of the day when a group of people arrived. They were in dire poverty, wearing torn woolen cloaks or garments, with their swords slung around their necks. Most of them, or rather all of them, were from the tribe of Mudhar. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw their poor condition, his face changed (out of concern). He went inside, then came out, and commanded Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to give the call to prayer (Adhan). He gave the Adhan and then the Iqamah, and the Prophet (ﷺ) led the prayer.
Afterward, he addressed the people, saying: "O people, fear your Lord who created you from a single soul..." (Surah An-Nisa: 1) and he recited the entire verse. He then recited the verse from Surah Al-Hashr: "Fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent forth for tomorrow..." (Surah Al-Hashr: 18).
The Prophet (ﷺ) then said: "Let a man give in charity from his gold, silver, clothing, a measure of barley, a measure of dates, or even a piece of a date."
Then a man from the Ansar came forward with a bundle that was so heavy it nearly overwhelmed him. After this, the people followed suit, giving in charity, until I saw two heaps of food and clothes. The face of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lit up as though it was a piece of gold (out of joy).
The Prophet (ﷺ) then said: "Whoever initiates a good practice in Islam will have its reward and the reward of those who act upon it after him, without their rewards diminishing in the least. And whoever initiates a bad practice in Islam will bear its burden and the burden of those who act upon it after him, without their burdens diminishing in the least."
