Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A funeral was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) to pray over it. He said: “Does your companion have any debt?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “Did he leave anything to cover it?” They said: “No.” He said: “Pray over your companion.” ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “His debt is on me, O Messenger of Allah.” So he stepped forward and prayed over it. In another narration with the same meaning, he said: “Allah has freed your pledge from the Fire, just as you freed your Muslim brother’s pledge. No Muslim servant pays his brother’s debt except that Allah frees his pledge on the Day of Resurrection.”
