Zujajat al-Masabih 1432Volume 1

English

Abu Ad-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "There are no three people in a village or desert among whom prayer is not established, except that Satan has overpowered them. So, adhere to the congregation, for the wolf eats the stray sheep." [Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Al-Nasa’i] Ali Al-Qari said: "The apparent meaning indicates that congregational prayer is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) or a mandatory act according to our school of thought, and it does not indicate that it is a communal obligation (fard kifayah). Our scholars did not say it is obligatory (fard) but rather mandatory (wajib) because the evidence is speculative. Our scholars said: 'It is understood from all these narrations that congregational prayer is a highly emphasized Sunnah, resembling an obligation in strength, as mentioned in Majma' al-Anhur and Al-Jawahir al-Munifah.'"
