Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "We are an unlettered nation; we do not write or calculate. The month is like this and this and this," and he folded his thumb on the third time, meaning twenty-nine days. Then he said, "The month is like this and this and this," meaning thirty days, indicating that sometimes it is twenty-nine and sometimes thirty.
