Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) addressed us, saying: "O people! Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you, so perform Hajj." A man asked: "Every year, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (ﷺ) remained silent until the man repeated it three times. Then he said: "If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory, and you would not have been able to do it. Leave me as I have left you (without excessive questioning), for those before you were destroyed by their many questions and disputes with their prophets. When I command you to do something, do as much of it as you can, and when I forbid you from something, avoid it completely."

And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage...

(1) The statement: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage..." indicates that Hajj is obligatory, but not absolutely—rather, only for those who are capable. As mentioned in At-Tafsirat al-Aḥmadiyyah. In Al-Hidayah, it is stated: "It is an established obligation, proven by the Book—Allah’s words: 'And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House...' (3:97)."

A pilgrimage to the House...

(2) The statement: "A pilgrimage to the House..." In Al-Hidayah, it is said: "It is obligatory only once in a lifetime." This is because its cause (the House) is singular, as indicated by the possessive construction in the verse. The ruling is tied to its cause, and since the cause does not recur, the obligation does not repeat. The ḥadith in Muslim states: "O people! Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you, so perform Hajj." A man asked: "Every year, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (ﷺ) remained silent until the man repeated it three times, then said: "If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory, and you would not have been able to do it." (Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar and Radd al-Muḥtar, summarized).

For whoever is able to find thereto a way...

(3) The statement: "For whoever is able to find thereto a way..." This general verse does not include women who lack a husband or a maḥram (non-marriageable male guardian), as a woman cannot travel or ride except with someone who can assist her—and this is only permissible with a maḥram or husband. Thus, she is not considered capable in such a case. Even if she were physically capable, true capability requires security from exposing what is impermissible for non-maḥrams to see (such as her feet, lower legs, or wrists), which can only be ensured by a maḥram. (Fatḥ al-Qadir)

Note 4

Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you...

(4) The statement: "Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you..." refers to Allah’s words: "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House..." (3:97). The obligation is once in a lifetime, as indicated by the Prophet’s (ﷺ) response: "If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory." The cause (the Kaʿbah) does not recur, so the obligation does not repeat. According to Abu Yusuf, it is immediately obligatory (not delayable), based on Allah’s command: "Whoever intends to perform Hajj, let him hasten," and the unpredictability of death. Abu Ḥanifah (in the more authentic narration) and Muḥammad held that it is delayable, like the time for prayer, unless death intervenes. The Prophet (ﷺ) delayed his own Hajj until the 10th year after its obligation in the 9th year, possibly due to the inability to perform it immediately or fear of the polytheists. (Sharḥ al-ʿAyni on Al-Kanz, Fath Allah al-Muʿin, summarized).

Note 5

If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory...

(5) The statement: "If I had said yes, it would have become obligatory..." supports the correct view that the Prophet (ﷺ) could exercise independent judgment (ijtihad) in rulings, not necessarily requiring revelation. This is the position of most Ḥanafī scholars, contrary to the Ashʿari and Muʿtazili view that his rulings were always divinely inspired. (Nur al-Anwar, Qamar al-Aqmar)

Chapter-heading commentary

Note 5
