English
Fadalh ibn Abd narrated: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The martyrs are four: A man of strong faith who meets the enemy, is true to Allah, and is killed; that is the one to whom people will raise their eyes on the Day of Resurrection like this—Umar raised his head until his cap fell, and I do not know if he meant his cap or the Prophet’s (ﷺ). A man of strong faith who meets the enemy, feels as if his skin is struck with talh thorns from cowardice, but a stray arrow kills him; he is in the second degree. A believer who mixed righteous and evil deeds, meets the enemy, is true to Allah, and is killed; he is in the third degree. A believer who transgressed against himself, meets the enemy, is true to Allah, and is killed; he is in the fourth degree.
