Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "There is no prize 1 except in arrows, hooves, or feet." [Narrated by Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Nasa’i] That is, taking money in a race is not permissible except in one of these, and our jurists included racing on foot with them because it is a means of jihad.

٣٨١٧ - وَعَنْ أَبِيْ هُرَيْرَةَ عرضي الله عنه قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صلي الله عليه وسلم : (لَا سَبَقَ إِلَّا فِي نَصْلٍ أَوْ خُفِّ أَوْ حَافٍ). رَوَاهُ الَّترْمِذِيُّ وَأَبُوْ دَاوُدَ وَالنَّسَائِيُّ، أَيْ لَا 1 يَحِلُّ أَخْذُ الْمَالِ بِالْمُسَابَقَةِ الَّا فِي أَحَدِهَا، وَأَلْحَقَ فُقَهَاؤُنَا بِهَا الْمُسَابَقَةِ بِالْأَقْدَاءِ؛ لِأَنَّهَا مِنْ أَسْبَابِ الْجِهَادِ.

(1) The statement: "taking money in a race is not permissible except in one of these, etc.": Racing without taking money is permissible according to the majority in all sports that teach horsemanship and aid jihad because the permissibility of a wager is established by the Hadith contrary to analogy, so it is permissible in others without a wager. Reflect. Cited from (Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar) and (Radd al-Muhtar).

(١)قوله: أي لا يحل أخذ المال بالمسابقة إلا في أحدها إلخ: وأما السباق بدون أخذ المال، فيحل عند الجمهور في كل الملاعب التي تعلم الفروسية وتعين على الجهاد؛ لأن جواز الجعل إنما ثبت بالحديث على خلاف القياس، فيجوز ما عداها بدون الجعل، فتأمل. التقطه من (الدر المختار) و(رد المحتار).
