The Chapter on Drinks

Zujajat al-Masabih 4156Volume 3

English

Amr ibn Shu’ayb narrated from his father from his grandfather: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) drinking standing and sitting. [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi] Al-Darimi, Ibn Majah, and al-Tirmidhi narrated from Ibn Umar: “We used to eat while walking 1 and drink while standing in the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).” Malik narrated from Ibn Shihab that Aishah, the Prophet’s wife (ﷺ), and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas saw no harm in drinking while standing. Malik also narrated from a source that Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abi Talib drank standing. Muhammad said: We take this view, seeing no harm in drinking standing, 2 which is the opinion of Abu Hanifah and most of our jurists.
