Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, 1 the closest of people to Allah is the one who initiates the greeting of peace.”

٤٤٨٦ - وَعَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ (رضي الله عنه) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «إِنَّ1 أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِاللَّهِ مَنْ بَدَأَ بِالسَّلَامِ». رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالتَّرْمِذِيُّ وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ.

If both greet simultaneously, each responds.” As stated in Al-Ghayathiyyah and At-Tatarkhaniyyah.
