Al-Bara’ ibn Azib narrated from his father that he said to Abu Bakr, “O Abu Bakr, tell me what you did when you traveled 1 with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).” He said, “We traveled by night and part of the next day until the sun was at its zenith, and the path was clear with no one passing. A tall rock with shade untouched by the sun appeared for us, so we stopped at it. I leveled a place for the Prophet (ﷺ) with my hand for him to sleep on and spread a cloak over it. I said, ‘Sleep, O Messenger of Allah, while I scout around you.’ He slept, and I went out to scout around him. I saw a shepherd approaching, so I said, ‘Is there milk in your flock?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Will you milk?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He took a sheep and milked a quantity of milk into a bowl. I had a waterskin I carried for the Prophet (ﷺ) to drink and perform ablution from. I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) but disliked waking him, so I waited until he awoke. I poured water over the milk until its base cooled. I said, ‘Drink, O Messenger of Allah.’ He drank until I was satisfied. Then he said, ‘Is it not time to move on?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ So we set off after the sun had declined. Suraqah ibn Malik followed us, and I said, ‘We’ve been caught, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed against him, and his horse sank up to its belly in solid ground. Suraqah said, ‘I see you have prayed against me. Pray for me, and by Allah, I will turn back those pursuing you.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed for him, and he was saved. He began telling everyone he met, ‘You are relieved of this matter,’ and turned back everyone he met. [Agreed Upon] The Shaykh said in Al-Lama’at: It is said the flock belonged to a friend of Abu Bakr. This is permissible as evidence of satisfaction. It is also said it was their custom to allow their shepherds to milk for passersby needing milk. It is possible he milked it for something in return.

Note 1
(1) His statement: you traveled: From “sara” in the language, meaning traveled by night, i.e., when you journeyed from Makkah to Madinah for the migration after leaving the cave. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 2
(2) His statement: the sun was at its zenith: Meaning the sun reached the middle of the sky. In Al-Nihayah: When the sun reaches the meridian, its shadow slows until it passes, so it seems to the observer as if it stopped, though it moves slowly with no rapid effect as before or after the zenith. This is called the sun at its zenith. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 3
(3) His statement: with no one passing: Emphasizing or explaining the previous point. His statement: appeared: Meaning it was shown. His statement: I scout: With damma on the fa’, meaning I investigate news, check for enemies, or see if there is any harm from foes or otherwise. His statement: a quantity of milk: With damma on kaf, then tha’, then ba’, meaning a measure of milk. It may mean filling the bowl or a small amount of water or milk. His statement: to drink: At-Tibi said: It should be “from it,” not “in it.” I say: In Al-Qamus, “in” can mean “from.” His statement: to drink and perform ablution: Explanatory clauses; the phrase “I had a waterskin, etc.” is a circumstantial clause between “he milked” and “I came to the Prophet (ﷺ).” His statement: I waited: With fa’ before qaf in verified copies, meaning I delayed for him. His statement: until I was satisfied: Meaning my heart was content. His statement: caught: In the passive, meaning the enemy reached us. His statement: sank: Meaning its legs sank as in sand. His statement: in solid ground: With two fathas, meaning firm ground. His statement: by Allah, I will: Nominative as the subject, meaning Allah guarantees for you. In some copies, it is accusative, implying an oath or omitting its particle. His statement: you are relieved: In the passive, meaning you are spared pursuit in this direction. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
