Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Abdullah ibn Salam heard of the arrival 1 of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was in a garden picking fruit. He came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “I will ask you about three things that only a prophet knows: What is the first sign of the Hour? What is the first food the people of Paradise will eat? And what makes a child resemble his father or his mother?” He said, “Jibril informed me of them just now. The first sign of the Hour is a fire that will gather people from the East to the West. The first food the people of Paradise will eat is the caudate lobe of a whale’s liver. If the man’s fluid precedes the woman’s, the child resembles him; if the woman’s fluid precedes, it resembles her.” 3 He said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah.” He said, “O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a slanderous people. If they learn of my Islam before you ask them, they will slander me.” The Jews came, and he said, “What kind of man is Abdullah among you?” They said, “The best of us and the son of the best of us, our master and the son of our master.” He said, “What if Abdullah ibn Salam embraced Islam?” They said, “May Allah protect him from that.” Abdullah came out and said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” They said, “The worst of us and the son of the worst of us,” and disparaged him. He said, “This is what I feared, O Messenger of Allah.”

Note 1
(1) His statement: arrival of the Messenger of Allah: Meaning his arrival from Makkah to Madinah. His statement: in a garden: Meaning an orchard. His statement: picking fruit: Meaning gathering fruits. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 2
(2) His statement: only a prophet knows: Meaning or one who takes from him or his book, so it does not raise an issue that he knew them generally or specifically. Thus, the answer became a miracle for him and certain knowledge of his prophethood, which is evident from including the Hadith in this chapter. I say: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not take from anyone or any book, so his answer undeniably proves his prophethood. His statement: Jibril informed me: Said to dispel the notion that he heard from scholars of the People of the Book. His statement: gather people: Meaning collect them. His statement: caudate lobe of a whale’s liver: Meaning its edge, the tastiest part of the liver. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
Note 3
(3) His statement: if the woman’s fluid precedes, it resembles her: The commentator said: “Resembles her” means the woman draws the child to resemble her due to her fluid’s dominance, or her fluid causes femininity. His statement: slander: With damma on ba’ and sukun on ha’, in Al-Nihayah: It is the plural of bahut, an intensive form of slander. His statement: they will slander me: With tashdid on nun or lightened, meaning they attribute slander to me or make me confused, as my Islam was not a clear proof against them. His statement: the best of us and the son of the best of us: Meaning in knowledge and righteousness. His statement: our master and the son of our master: Meaning in lineage. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)
