Abu Habibah narrated: “He entered the House when Uthman was besieged and heard Abu Hurairah seeking Uthman’s permission to speak. He permitted him, so he stood, praised Allah, and said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “You will face a trial and discord after me”—or he said: “discord and a trial.”’ Someone asked: ‘Who 1 should we follow, O Messenger of Allah, or what do you command us?’ He said: ‘Follow 2 the leader and his companions,’ pointing to Uthman.”

(1) His statement “Who should we follow, O Messenger of Allah”: At-Tibi said: This refers to “discord,” meaning you will face discord between the leader and those who oppose him. Who do you command us to follow to be safe? The doubt between the two phrases yields the same meaning. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

(2) His statement “Follow the leader and his companions”: meaning Abu Hurairah, or more likely the Prophet (ﷺ), pointing to Uthman, meaning by “the leader,” either present in that assembly or mentioned. (As stated in Al-Mirqat)

(۱) قوله : فمن لنا يا رسول الله : قال الطيبي : هو متوجه إلى قوله: «اختلافا» أي ستلقون اختلافا بين الأمير، ومن خرج عليه، فمن تأمرنا أن نتبعه ونلزمه، فتكون لنا العافية لا علينا، أو ما تأمرنا به شك من الراوي بين اللفظين، مع أن مؤداهما في المعنى واحد. كذا في «المرقاة».

(۲) قوله: عليكم بالأمير وأصحابه وهو: أي أبو هريرة، والأظهر أي النبي الله يشير إلى عثمان بذلك، أي بقوله: الأمير بأن يكون حاضرا في ذلك المجلس، أو مذكورا فيه. كذا في «المرقاة».

(35) قوله: فمن لنا يا رسول الله. علامہ طیبی نے فرمایا یہ اختلاف سے یعنی تم امیر اور ان کے خلاف باغیوں کے درمیان اختلاف دیکھو گے سے متعلق ہے آپ ہم کو کس کی اتباع کرنے اور کس کے ساتھ رہنے کا حکم فرماتے ہیں جس میں ہمارے لئے عافیت ہے اور نہ ہو یا او ما تامرنا راوی کا دو کلمات کے درمیان شک ہے اور دونوں کا معنی و مطلب ایک ہے۔ (مرقات) (36) قوله: عليكم بالامير واصحابه وهو . میں ہو کا مرجع ابو ہریرہ ہیں نہیں بلکہ واضح ثابت یہ ہے کہ اس کا مرجع نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہیں اس سے آپ حضرت عثمان کی طرف اشارہ فرما رہے تھے۔ يشير الى عثمان بذلك . والا امیر کی طرف اشارہ ہے کہ اس مجلس میں حضرت عثمان موجود تھے یا آپ کا ذکر رہا ہو۔ (مرقات)
