Yazid ibn Nu‘aym ibn Hazzal narrated from his father (may Allah be pleased with him): Ma‘iz ibn Malik was an orphan in my father’s care. He had relations with a girl from the tribe. My father said to him: Go to the Messenger of Allah and tell him what you did; perhaps he will seek forgiveness for you, hoping it might be a way out for him. He came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery, so establish Allah’s Book on me. He turned away from him. He returned and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery, so establish Allah’s Book on me, until he said it four times. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: You have said it four times; with whom? He said: With so-and-so. He said: Did you lie with her? He said: Yes. He said: Did you touch her? He said: Yes. He said: Did you have intercourse with her? He said: Yes. He ordered him to be stoned. He was taken to al-Harra. When stoned and felt the stones’ impact, he panicked and ran swiftly. Abdullah ibn Unays met him, as his Companions were unable, and struck him with a camel’s bone, threw it, and killed him. He came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and mentioned it. He said: Why did you not leave him; perhaps he would repent, and Allah would accept his repentance.
