Mughirah ibn Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I ate with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) one night. He ordered a side of meat to be roasted, then took a knife and began cutting pieces for me. Bilal came to call him for prayer. He threw down the knife and said: “What is with him, may his hands be dusty!” His mustache was full, so he said to me: “Shall I trim it for you with a stick, or trim it with a stick?” [Narrated by al-Tirmidhi]
In Bukhari’s narration from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Let your beards grow and trim your mustaches.” Al-Tahawi said: Al-Murni and al-Rabi’ used to trim fully, which aligns with Abu Hanifah and his companions’ view that trimming the mustache fully is better than shortening it. The hadith of Mughirah does not prove anything, as the Prophet (ﷺ) may have done so without scissors present for trimming the mustache.
